Euro 2012 - Your thoughts (Acido Tyke)
Euro 2012 has started, and Vital England always keen to gain membership participation, it is question time with you, the Vital England members, asked to give the answers.
Next up is
Acido Tyke, so without further ado here are the answers given...
1) Are you looking forward to Euro 2012?
I wasn't sure up until the tournament actually kicked off on Friday. But after watching the opening games and remembering that we/England are also involved, it really got me excited. The buzz building up to the France game yesterday was just like when it's the World Cup.
2) Poland & Ukraine, good selections for the finals?
I never used to like the idea of two co-hosts for a tournament, but since Belgium & Holland did it for Euro '00 and Japan & S.Korea for the World Cup, I think the idea is a good one. I don't mind Poland & Ukraine hosting it but I think Poland would have struggled to qualify had they not been an automatic choice.
3) Is Roy Hodgson the right man to lead us into battle this summer, and in the next few years - if not who did you want?
I've always liked Roy and I think he is a good choice, and surely he was the next best choice after Harry Redknapp. Although apparently Harry didn't get offered the job and he now says he would have liked it! We were heading nowhere under the over rated and over paid Fabio Capello, so something new and dare I say it, something English was needed.
4) What about the final 23-man squad, happy?
I'm happy enough with the squad yes, but it was a shame that Frank Lampard couldn't make it. Too much is being made out of the Rio Ferdinand story, Roy was well within his rights to not pick him.
5) Who do you see as being the 'key man' for England?
I was hoping Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck could make a name for themselves up front, and hopefully this will take some pressure off Rooney when he comes back.
6) Which player - injured or just left out - would you most have liked taken, and why?
As I said in another answer, I would have liked to see Frank Lampard there just to give us more options. Maybe he and Gerard can't play together in the same squad but he's an important player to have around and be able to bring in.
7) What about the player in the final 23 that you would have most liked left out, and why?
I wasn't sure whether the kid Oxlade would be good enough at this stage of his career, so I might have left him at home.
8) How far do you reckon England will progress this summer?
I always wanted us to make it out of the group stages at least, and then we'll see what happened from there. I predict we will do that and then lose in the Qtrs.
9) If it's not England who do you think will win Euro 2012?
Even before a ball had been kicked I would have gone for Germany. Now after seeing all the teams play, I've got to say Russia look like a good bet as an outsider. Many thanks to
Acido Tyke.
