UEFA Nations League Explained

UEFA Nations League Explained

Europe's governing body UEFA, has finally created a tournament that will, at last, replace the majority of meaningless friendlies.

RIP friendlies - well almost!

For years we, the fans have had to put up with watching games that, to be honest, no one was really interested in. In addition, players would often (another phrase could be, 'allegedly') pull out of their respective squads by coming up with inventive ways to avoid being involved in matches that meant absolutely nothing.

The first example that comes to mind is when Ryan Giggs was applying his trade at Manchester United. How often did he pull out of the Wales squads and how often did his then team manager, Sir Alex Ferguson encourage him to say 'NO, not interested' when none Euro or World Cup qualifiers came around.

Fans from the Home Nations were also turning their backs on paying to watch games with no meaning, especially when we have the Premier League on our doorstep.

UEFA has said that Nations League will not kill off international friendlies completely, but the amount of games will be hugely curtailed.

Nations League & England

Before I get onto how the Nations League will work England have been drawn in League A alongside Spain and Croatia.

England v Spain - Saturday 8 September 2018 (7.45pm kick-off)

Croatia v England - Friday 12 October 2018 (7.45pm kick-off)

Spain v England - Monday 15 October 2018 (7.45pm kick-off)

England v Croatia - Sunday 18 November (2pm kick-off)

Time for the nitty-gritty....

UEFA Nations League Explained

I would do myself an injustice if I tried to explain the 'ins and outs' and so I will gladly admit to bottling it and in doing so, allow someone else to do the honours.

Nations League Trophy

I think it will take time for many of us to get our heads around this new format. Having said that it has to be better than what we had before.
