Liverpool Had Chance At England Hopeful
Rumour has it Liverpool could be readying a move for Sunderland's Jordan Pickford in the not too distant future. Well, he's claimed to be on their radar according to Clubcall.
They cannot substantiate anything else but this so-called Liverpool interest in the keeper who has worked his way into the England squad this season under Gareth Southgate - he knows Pickford very well from his time as his manager for the U21s.
However, it has emerged this week former Liverpool and England keeper Chris Kirkland had advised his old club to make a move for Pickford last summer - advice the Reds didn't take.
Kirkland knows the youngster well himself as they were teammates at Preston when Pickford had a loan at Deepdale a couple of years back.
He believes he'll have interest from clubs around England and Europe at the end of the season and definitely isn't going to be a Sunderland player next term - if he doesn't leave before.
Kirkland was quoted by BT Sport, via the Liverpool Echo as saying:
'I told Liverpool to sign him last summer. He will have all of the top clubs looking at him - not just in England, but in Europe as well. He definitely won't be there (at Sunderland) next summer. I wouldn't be surprised if he is not there come January.'
His praise continued:
'For me, he could be one of the best in the world - he is the best I have worked with, that's for sure. He would make saves like that all of the time at Preston. I think he has made the second most saves in the Premier League this season. It is really up to him how far he goes, because he has the whole package.'
I too believe Pickford is destined for big things and is more than capable of playing for a club like Liverpool.
However, from an England point of view the main thing is for him to play football. As he's getting that week-in-week-out at Sunderland - and is still very young for a keeper - perhaps shouldn't be in too much of a hurry to move on?
