Beckham Hopes Gerrard Carries On
I do not think that anyone could ever be in any doubt just how much playing for England meant to David Beckham could they?
Quite clearly pulling on that England shirt, as it should mind, meant the world to him and he would NEVER shy away from doing so - and he never did!
Some felt, maybe rightly so, that Becks continued to make himself available to England for a little too long perhaps?
In answer to that, my own view, would be pretty much the same now as it was then - if he was good enough to play for England, at whatever age he was, then I would want him to play for England. He also had this presence about him that, more often than not, seemed to inspire those around him too.
An interview with sky sports news, although I also think he has done one with the BBC too, has him talking about his own England career and that of Steven Gerrard - who is at that crossroads that Becks was after England's exit at the 2006 world cup.
I think it was the 2006 world cup; my memory fails me these days!
He felt the time was right for him to step down as captain due to a move to America and with Steve McClaren taking over as manager, although he still made himself available for selection but McClaren elected to basically 'retire' Beckham, who did eventually return for England in the end...
Becks has spoken about how much he misses playing football, but most of all playing for England so if Gerrard feels he can continue to do so he believes that he should carry on and also carry on as captain: 'the young players need someone to look up to and a mentor - someone that has been there and done it - and I think that Steve is a great captain. He has been for Liverpool and England.'
Yep, Becks said he would 'love' to see the Liverpool man carry on, although he also knows that he does not need his advice, but did finish by saying: 'he doesn't need my advice but one thing that I would say; that if you can play for England as long as you can, then do it.'
I am still torn on this one you know.
Becks is right that Gerrard has this something about him but I am not, if completely honest, so sure that he is that inspirational and motivational character to the great level that he is with Liverpool when it comes to England.
The young player could still benefit from him being around but on the other hand they might be held back from their progression if Gerrard, who will be 36 when Euro 2016 gets here, continues to play on and gets selected as he is the captain.
I think, in many ways, whatever Gerrard decides will be the right move and I am something like 60:40 thinking that he will think the time is right to step down and move on to concentrate on Liverpool for the final years of his footballing career...
We will find out soon enough anyway eh but what do you think?
