From Bad To Worse For England...

Every time when the 'Fifa world rankings' are released I always say, when I used to cover such things, that they were pretty worthless...

I was saying this when England were in the top few in the world, so you will not see me saying otherwise now that we look destined to slip to the lowest position that we have occupied in almost a couple of decades when a ranking of 20th will be announced when the next standings come out.

Although there is an apparent 'twist', we will drop as low as 20th only if Costa Rica are able to beat Italy in this evenings quarter final, or take that game to extra time?

Since going into Euro 96, as a 'lowly' 24th - in main due to our failure to even make it to the 1994 world cup and then not playing competitively going into Euro 96 as we were the hosts nation - we have not sunk so low in terms of Fifa ranking.

I do not think that these rankings mean too much, although obviously they can make a difference when it comes to tournament seeding and who gets who for qualification campaigns so as 'pointless' as I might think they are the sooner we can start climbing again the better...

Something around 10th, give or take is, I would think, a more realistic view of where England stand in world football for me.

This will be used as further 'doom and gloom' talk, but I think for the foreseeable future we have to have some patience and show faith in what Roy Hodgson is doing as I still feel, even if it might not seem like it, that we are starting to go forwards.

Yep, we might have had to go backwards to do so but I am confident about the future and think we will be happy enough around this time in a couple of years, and ideally in 4-years too!

20th in the world, meh...
