England MOTM v Italy

England MOTM v Italy

The votes have been counted and verified with the Vital England viewers rated, unsurprisingly, Raheem Sterling as the MOTM against Italy.

Yep the game ended in defeat but it was a 'credible defeat' with England unable to be criticised for not 'having a go', as was the complaint against us a couple of years back in Euro 2012 and in particularly in the penalty shootout defeat to the Italians.

Sterling was given a first competitive start for England and did not let us down with his league form with Liverpool last season continuing.

There were times when Sterling 'went missing', but you would expect this from a player of his age and type but would also spring into life and offer a real threat with him key to our instant equalising goal.

In my opinion I think we would be better served playing him wide against Uruguay, let him get at them from a wide area to cause them problems and perhaps see their South American temperament tested - we have already seen that Uruguay can 'lose their heads' if they get a little too frustrated!

WC - Italy MotM
Sterling 56%
Rooney 12%
Sturridge 12%
Cahill 6%
Jagielka 6%
Welbeck 6%
Hart 2%
Johnson 0%
Baines 0%
Henderson 0%
Gerrard 0%
Sub - Barkley 0%
Sub - Wilshere 0%
Sub - Lallana 0%

I think we can safely say that Rooney getting 12% was more a 'sarcastic' vote, then again he was also key to our equalising goal so it can be argued that he did play an important role really...

Sterling was definitely the standout performer for us though.
