Wickham Wants In

4-years ago Connor Wickham had the world at his feet. He, like the U17 team that take on Holland tonight, was part of the England side competing at the European U17 championships.

In fact he was not only part of the side that was facing Spain in the final he ended up being the player scoring the winning goal to give us a 2-1 win to become European champions.

Things, for much of the time since, have not gone as planned for the forward so he has fired a warning, when talking in the Independent, to those taking part tonight - 'win' first and foremost and then stay 'level-headed'.

Who is the only member of that victorious U17 side in Liechtenstein to be going to Brazil?

Ross Barkley, and Wickham knows that 'it could have been him' had things worked out differently for him over the years, with many of them spent with him struggling for 1st team football at Sunderland.

Wickham ended the season in very impressive form for Sunderland though.

Gus Poyet showed faith in him with him a key member of the side that managed to stay in the premier league with that form bringing talk of a possible England call-up, this did not come about in time for the world cup but it is now his intentions to 'get into the England set-up as soon as possible'.

Should Wickham, who is still only 21, continue to perform as he did in the final weeks of last season then a call-up could, and maybe will, come next season.
