Rooney To Thrive With Less Pressure

Rooney To Thrive With Less Pressure

I have always liked Peter Crouch, even when other have not been 'so sure' on him - not sure why, playing for the club I support a couple of times probably helped.

He does not often have too much to say on matters concerning other players really but I think he could have a good point about thoughts shared about Wayne Rooney on sky sports recently, well at least I hope what I think is a good point does come off...

Since, and including, that breakthrough tournament in 2004 we have virtually gone into every tournament with Rooney our 'big hope' for success.

More often than not he has not lived up to this hype with that 2004 breakthrough remains is best for England.

In fact Rooney, quite often, has been a real disappointment.

Such have been my thoughts that perhaps Rooney hinders, instead of benefits, England I went as far as suggesting that he should not even go to the world cup!

Ok, perhaps that was a bit too far as he should be in the squad, I do not subscribe to the views that he must be in the starting XI mind...

I still feel that the inclusion of a good number of young talent will benefit England but most of all, like Crouch, I feel that the young attacking talent that we have can take some of the weight of expectancy off Rooney.

As long as he 'allows this to happen' and does not think he needs to 'do it himself' not only could he thrive but so could England this summer.

Crouch is spot on, Rooney has barely had his name mentioned in the lead-up to the world cup - to date - whereas in the build-ups to tournaments gone by it has been 'Rooney-this and Rooney-that'.

He, for me, is no longer 'the main man' but could actually end up having a really good and potentially influential tournament for us due to those around him who some say will not 'handle the pressure' but I think they will and can aide the load expectancy on him...

Thoughts?
