Baines Now The First Choice?

Baines Now The First Choice?

In all fairness to Leighton Baines his England credentials have been well placed for a good few years now, he has been there or thereabouts (seriously threatening) since he missed out on the 2010 world cup finals - thoughts of being 'homesick' meant he missed the world cup cut for South Africa?

I have always been a fan of Baines, way back to his Wigan days, but his consistency over the past few years with Everton has been great. While Man United are a great club I do hope that he can resist the lure of that move and stays with Everton, as it appears to be a good fix.

What is it they say, if it aint broke don't fix it...

This season Baines has well and truly played himself in serious contention not only to ensure, without a doubt, that he makes the squad for next summers world cup but also makes this as the first choice left back?

Going back to the start of the season, like him or not, I still had Ashley Cole pegged as the no.1 left back that England had, but he has not always been the first choice with Chelsea let alone England.

I think Baines offers England, all-in-all with all things considered about what they both offer us as a left back, the best option - both get forward well but Baines' delivery is superb and his threat from freekicks around the box could be priceless.

Of course it is a decision for Roy Hodgson to make but Baines surely must be considered as the best left back that England now have?

As for Cole, you would be somewhat surprised if he did not even make the squad but maybe, just maybe he could...

If his former Arsenal protégé Kieran Gibbs can stay injury free, keep producing the goods for Arsenal and play regularly, he might even force Cole out of the England fold and into early international retirement before Brazil this summer...

It has to be Baines based on this seasons form, with perhaps Gibbs and Shaw looking to get a squad place over Cole as things stand
