'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Another Time?

It is hard to believe that Jonjo Shelvey is still only 21-years-old.

He seems to have been around the game for an age, then again that was because I seem to recall him making his Charlton debut as a 15, or 16-year-old some years back!

Such was his ability, as well as future potential, Liverpool sniffed around him for a while before finally bringing him in, which I think would have been around the time that Roy Hodgson was manager at the club?

Eventually he made his breakthrough into the Liverpool side, and in time he got drafted into the England squad by Hodgson, making his debut in October 2012 against San Marino - this meant that he had then represented England at all levels.

Never really able to hold down a regular 1st team place at Anfield a 5m move to Swansea took place in the summer...

Following this move Shelvey has been in fine form, and this has led to whispers on more than once occasion that he could force himself back into the England thinking, a view that the coaching staff at Swansea have also expressed.

Should Shelvey continue to impress if he cannot get back into the England squad I would be surprised.

Can he do this with the world cup in mind next summer?

That I am not so sure about, not that you rule this out, but you would expect that he can come back with future world cups in mind and certainly be a big part of the plans for Euro 2016 anyway...

Personally I am not a huge fan, though I hope that playing for Swansea a team of obvious football ability week in week out, will refine his game and with experience, he will add intelligence. He always seems a little hung ho for me, but as was written, he is still 21 and developing
