'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Honouring a legend

'Legend' is too easily used these days, although I really do think that it is not stretching the term by calling Sir Bobby Robson a legend.

The FA is honouring the former England manager, who proved himself at a number of clubs both home and abroad during a glittering career, as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations.

A 'Sir Bobby Robson Day' will take place on August 10th, with the aims of this being the 'advertising and promotion of grassroots football, and will incorporate numerous clubs of all levels.'

A fitting gesture to such a great man, who lost his battle with illness in 2009...

If I discount Ramsey, as I was too young to remember or appreciate his work, I would say without question that Bobby was the best England manager in my lifetime, but even in his case, he was much maligned when in the job and perhaps if it wasn't for 1990 and his latter achievements home and abroad, he would probably srtill be branded another international failure by the majority. perhaps it shows what a mess England have been in the last 40+ years

might sound somewhat harsh but perhaps you are right ox. i often wonder what would have been 'if' he had carried on beyond italia 90?
would we have done so well in 1990, or was it easier with the pressure off?
had we done as well anyway would the years to follow have been better...

am sure we would have found some way to feck things up. Problem we have always had if that we never build on what we have and our development programme has always been poor. only in the last few years have we started to understand that we need to build solid foundations from youth football and move away from looking towards the big and quick kids over the less physically develloped but technically better kids. even now though winning is primary over technical work and for that we have to continue to work on parental attitudes as much as coaches
oxfordspur
give me something that offers us something for the long-term over winning in the short-term and i will take that - if what we are working at now brings us something sustainable that will do me.
