'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Captain Rooney

With Steven Gerrard suspended and Frank Lampard injured England were looking for a stand-in captain for the game against San Marino tonight.

Roy Hodgson has decided to turn to Wayne Rooney, saying: 'I've enjoyed working with Wayne, we had a good Euros and I enjoyed working with him there.

'I was disappointed when he got that terrible gash and I was even worried it could rule him out of not only the September games, but also the October games.

'Luckily he's made a very quick recovery and now he's available for the games, and he'll certainly captain the team in the first one.'

On the 'honour' of leading his country, which it is, Rooney himself said: 'it's a great honour, it's something I'm really proud of.

'It's a big challenge for myself, I'm really looking forward to it and excited, and hopefully we can cap the day off with a good victory.'

I would think that it is almost 100% certain Wayne that you will be captaining England to a win tonight, if we do not win then we have to worry quite seriously about our ability!

This means that the Man United man 76th cap will see him captain his side, from the start at least, for the first time...

I'm happy with this to be honest, I think there's something a bit different about Rooney lately, he's maturing as a footballer this season and I really hope he plays behind Defoe tonight.

we also have to consdider who else there is available without Lampard or Gerrard. could we really see Ashley Cole getting the armband after his recent problems? beyond Rooney, who else if there that is absolutely secure in his starting place
