Terry calls time on England career

John Terry has called time on his England career, retiring from international football with immediate effect.

Chelsea's 31-year-old captain informed Roy Hodgson of his decision before releasing a statement on Sunday night.

To be honest I am far from Terry's biggest fan - as a person - but kind of understand his decision, with him deciding that an international future was 'untenable' following the FA's decision to pursue charges against him for racial abuse, despite being cleared in court in July...

The FA called a disciplinary hearing for 'abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' and 'reference to the ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race of Ferdinand' following his run in with Anton Ferdinand last season, with this hearing being conducted today.

As it happens I think the timing is right, and probably was after Euro 2012, for Terry to step aside as, despite his obvious commitment to England on-the-field, it has started to be apparent for a while that it was time for The Three Lions to start looking beyond Terry.

Whatever the views are on the guy, and he has a somewhat chequered history off-the-field, we cannot really fault him for what he did for England when wearing the England shirt.

So, the twice former captain deserves a decent amount of credit as he rarely let us down during his 78-caps - the last of which came last month against Moldova - did he?

Dont like him as a man, but he was an excellent leader and player. however, I am pleased we can now move on and look to the talented CBs that have so far been inthe shadows of Terry and to a much lesser extent Rio. the likes of Lescott, Jagielka, Cahill and perhaps in the near future, Caulker, Jones and Smalling are all very capable of stepping in and being very decent players for England, but I feel they need to feel like they are there on merit, and not as John Terrys understudy

Time for him to go anyway. As a man he rates as a 0, this gives England the chance to bring forward someone like Cahill or one of the rest

agree TT. also bringing back Rio would be a big mistake, in terms of his fitness, ability and also perhaps the harmony of the dressing room, which his inclusion is sure to divide

FOUR GAMES!!! He must have some tasty pix of a few FA Committee members to only get that ban...
