Development role for Ashworth

The FA's 'director of elite development' has been filled, as expected, by Dan Ashworth.

At West Brom, where he has been since 2007, he has been 'largely responsible for player recruitment, the Academy and sports science' during his time with The Baggies, where he has been highly rated.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace, talking to the official website, said: 'Dan has worked tirelessly for this club over the past eight years.

'He has certainly taken on a challenging role within the FA and will leave with our best wishes. The Sporting & Technical Director post is a position we firmly believed was vital to the success of this football club and Dan has helped to shape this role.

'He has overseen the appointment of three head coaches and the continuation of the club's traditional playing philosophy.

'His contribution has been a key factor in our two most recent promotion successes and the securing of an unprecedented third successive season in the Premier League.'

West Brom wanted to retain Ashworth's services but to work within the national set up is 'an ambition he has held for a long time' so it was not possible for them.

Peace does feel that the decision to take both Roy Hodgson, as the England manager, and Ashworth to work among the set-up 'reflects well' on West Brom, even if it has been difficult to lose both.

Ashworth will continue to fulfil his West Brom duties for the remainder of this season, taking up his role with the FA next summer...

Know he is highly rated and obviously Hodgson will know him well, but other than that i dont know too much about him

ditto Oxford, will bow to hodgson and the FA on this appointment, oh and southgate was also 'championing' him wasnt he!
Rug
I am guessing the relationship between him and Hodgson cemented his appointment, but I believe he is highly thought of in the game and it is a role suited to an unselfish thinker than someone who wants the limelight
