Deeper Rooney

What a nasty image that title conjures up, one I would sooner forget - then again it probably just my warped mind thinking this!

Anyway, I digress...

Wayne Rooney has always, well in recent years, been viewed more as a striker that can 'play off' a main striker.

In the midweek win over Italy Tom Cleverley was utilised in a position between midfield and attack.

Roy Hodgson, whilst admitting his United teammate is arguably naturally more suited to do that, has no qualms about using Rooney is such a role when he returns, having been rested for the friendly: 'there is a slight difference in respect of Cleverley spending most of his career in central midfield, whilst Wayne has played a lot as an attacker, but it is a fairly small nuance.

'There is nothing to stop Wayne Rooney playing in that position. He would be very good at it.

'The major point is the quality of passes we get through to that player, the movement of the front player and what we get out of the wide players.'

Could such a role see Rooney return to his best for England?
