'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Youthful England

Playing an international friendly just days before the premier league season kicks-off is always a stupid, and why Fifa continue to have a fixture at this time is bemusing!

A friendly will indeed be played in 15th August in Switzerland against Italy though...

Why select a number of senior players that will 'probably' pull out anyway?

So, to avoid this Roy Hodgson has opted for a number of younger players to give them a chance, some of whom impressed him playing for Team GB in the Olympics or for the clubs at the tail end of last season.

Ryan Bertrand (pictured) of Chelsea and Spurs pair Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore come in for the first time with Tom Cleverley and Daniel Sturridge, as expected, returning to the squad.

Also returning to the squad, having been forced out of Euro 2012 by injury, are John Ruddy and Gary Cahill with injuries meaning that Kyle Walker and Jack Rodwell could not be considered, but they too return along with Adam Johnson who failed to make the cut for Euro 2012.

Having opted not to be selected for the finals in the summer Michael Carrick has been given a chance to prove he is worthy of a place with the Man United man recalled.

The squad in full is below...

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Jack Butland (Birmingham City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Jake Livermore (Tottenham Hotspur), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

What do we make of this squad guys, happy or disappointed?

With the kids on show, I am probably more excited by this game than I would have been if it was the same old faces. Shame that the likes of Sturridge and Ox are out, plus it would have been good to see Welbeck selected and wilshere fit
