England - Germans issue bullet-proof vest warnings

Apparently a German spokesman has advised their players to wear bullet-proof vests whenever they leave their hotels in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup.

This was told as an anecdote by a speaker from the SA Local Organising Committee at a meeting at South Africa House yesterday. He and a couple of other speakers from the International Marketing Council of SA and from their Tourism Department went to great lengths to re-assure us that they had fans' security in hand. An extra 40,000 police would be taken on for the Finals and SA would be as safe as Germany was.

The 6 new stadiums are all on course to be finished on time and as an example the Sun City stadium, costing 3 billion rand (£250 million), has taken just two and a half years to build from scratch [a bit cheaper and quicker than Wembley]. The Cape Town stadium will be within walking distance of 65% of the cities hotels.

Massive Fans' parks will be available to watch games on big screens, with other entertainment available all day.

All transport links are being massively upgraded and, they assured the meeting that, if a coach broke down on route to a game, the locals would rally round and take the fans in private vehicles.

450,000 fans are expected to visit SA during the World Cup, leaving a legacy of improved infrastructure that will benefit the country for years to come.
